30 Minute SEO Tip: How to Get Featured in a Rich Snippet

Read this first: for this tip we’re making the reasonable assumption that you’re blogging for your business.

Why is this a ‘reasonable’ assumption?

Because without consistent blogging, you’re not going to make any significant SEO progress. It’s essential, and if you want to learn more, we wrote a whole series about it! Find out more on our blog, and read the series for everything you need to know.

Have you ever Googled a question and seen this?

What it is:

Rich snippets are Google’s way of providing helpful data right in the search results. Google likes to show as much information as possible, in as beautiful a format as possible.

They can include everything from quotes, how-to lists, weather, stock info, and beyond. It’s almost endless. There’s a lot to say about rich snippets, but know this:

In the long run, rich snippets help both the user and help the website source. They take a little bit of set up (but not much), and most people don’t take them time to provide Google the right information. It’s a lost opportunity if you’re not using rich snippets.

But for those who do set up rich snippets?

You’ll get increase in rankings, more traffic, and higher click throughs.

Why it’s good for your SEO:

Rich snippets are amazing for everyone–users love them because they help them find exactly what they are looking for, and businesses (mostly) love them because having rich snippets helps you stand out in a big way, and gives Google great insight into what you’re all about.

But not everyone loves rich snippets…

If you do just a little bit of research, you’ll find that a lot of businesses don’t like rich snippets.


Because they think that by having the answer in a rich snippet people no longer have any need to visit their site, thus Google is ‘stealing’ their traffic. Sure, this does happen in some cases, especially when there’s a quick, easy answer (like the time zone in another location, weather, or even something like “How old is Lisa Kudrow?” (53, BTW)).

Occasionally rich snippets are ‘bad’ for business, but ultimately being featured in them means that your business is at the top, and Google wants to show you off. And this is a GREAT thing.

And on top of that, it means that Google really knows who are you and why you should show up online. Also a great thing.

So now that we’re all on the same page about the why, let’s get to what you’re really here for: the how!

How to get it:

With just 30 minutes of work today:

1. Identify a specific question

To get featured in that coveted position zero spot, you need to succinctly answer a specific question. Identify a question you can answer in a quick list format, or in one sentence. Remember, Google’s goal is to put as complete an answer as possible in the most succinct way possible.

So help Google, and Google will help you.

To identify your specific question for your featured snippet, use these Qs to guide you:

  • What keywords are you targeting?
  • What questions does your audience ask?
  • What can you answer briefly and completely?

2. Answer the question in a blog post

Once you’ve identified your question, time to answer it!

Write up a post that is short and sweet, but completely answers the question. Write the post, promote it on your social media and newsletter, and you’ll be on your way to getting featured in a rich snippet!

Pro Tip: be sure to include great photos, and a content upgrade! Providing lots of value boosts your SEO and makes for a great experience for your readers.


3. Repeat, Repeat.

The best possible chance of getting featured in a rich snippet is to have many choices for Google (aka, answer lots of those quick questions that you identified in step 1). You’re facing stiff competition, so help Google and yourself out by giving them lots of opportunities to find a complete and succinct answer on your site.

4. Continue to work on your SEO
