AI’s Impact on SEO: The Future of Search Engine Optimization

What is AI?

AI, or Artificial Intelligence, is a branch of computer science that deals with creating intelligent machines that can perform tasks that typically require human-level intelligence, such as recognizing speech, understanding natural language, making decisions, and recognizing images.

AI systems use a combination of machine learning, natural language processing, and other techniques to simulate human intelligence and learn from data.

AI has gotten a lot of press since the release of ChatGPT in December of 2022.

It took just 5 days for it to reach 1 million users. For context it took Facebook 10 months and Netflix 3 years to reach 1 million users.

Chat GPT is truly remarkable because it responds to queries with natural sounding language. If you haven’t played around with it. Open up a new tab and go ask it anything — my hunch is you will be impressed with the results.

Over the last 6 weeks, we have gotten asked about AI on nearly every one of our monthly client SEO calls.

We certainly don’t have all of the answers.

But in this post we will talk about AI and how it affects SEO. We will also share some of our favorite ways to use it in your business.

The most common question we have been asked about AI and SEO is:

What Does Google Think about AI?

Great question, they told us on Feb 8  when they released this article, “Google Search’s Guidance about AI-generated Content”  The key sentence in the whole report was this,

Our focus on the quality of content, rather than how content is produced, is a useful guide that has helped us deliver reliable, high quality results to users for years.

Quality Content.

Google cares about Quality Content.

They want to give the best answers for all search queries.

Google doesn’t care if a human or AI wrote the article as long as it provides value to the user.

If you are ready to dive in and have AI write your blog posts, we recommend a hybrid solution. Use ChatCPT (or another tool like Jasper, CopyAI, Frase or Anyword) to write some content, but it is important that you refine the article so that it is in your voice.

Remember, people buy from people. So be sure to put your brand voice throughout all of your articles – especially those written by AI.

How Should I use ChatGPT or another AI tool in my business?

There are lots of different ways to capitalize on AI technology, here are two ways we are using it at Clapping Dog Media.

Content Creation: Use AI technology to to write articles, social media captions, and even ad copy. We use it for writing creative headlines.

Research: We use AI tools to research editorial calendar ideas. We use it to look for trends in various industries and then we do specific research for our clients.

What are the drawbacks of using AI in my business?

Accuracy. This is the biggest struggle with AI writing tools.

You can not post AI generated content without checking it.

There has been a lot of negative chatter about Bing’s new AI tool. In a recent product demo, Bings AI tool had a lot of inaccuracies and is getting a lot of negative feedback.

Even on the main page of Chat GDP they are pretty upfront about the limitations.

Refer back to Google’s response to AI, Quality, Quality, Quality. If you have AI write for you, check the accuracy.

What Industry is going to be affected the most by AI in 2023?

We wish we had a crystal ball that told us what is going to happen next. If we did, we would buying lottery tickets right now.

In our opinion, we do think that AI will disrupt food blogging sooner rather than later.

AI tools simply give the answer to queries, so if you are looking for a top rated taco salad recipe, that is exactly what you get– just a list of the ingredients and step by step cooking instructions.

In recent years, a lot of food bloggers will write 1000+ words for every recipe. While it can be nice to learn about the inspiration behind the ingredients or how the recipe originated, most of the time, users click, Jump to Recipe and get straight to the recipe. They don’t want to read the backstory, they just want the recipe.

It is our opinion that in the highly competitive world of food blogging that AI will change the rules sooner rather than later.

AI is the shiny new tool that everyone is talking about. We like it and think that using AI tools can help improve the relevance and accuracy of search results. This means that businesses need an SEO Strategy that focuses on providing high-quality, personalized content that provides value to users.
